Key Stage 4

Year 9

At KS4 many students choose to follow Art at GCSE, students are entered for a qualification in Art & Design from OCR Examining Board. In Years 9/10 students are introduced to a wide range of techniques and skills as part of the surfaces project.

Term 1: Students build on their prior drawing skills whilst exploring a wide range of media. Students research both contemporary and historic artists to support their investigations.

Term 2: The above skills are further practiced and improved with a portraits project, students learn about proportions and develop their painting skills.

Term 3: Students start work on their coursework worth 60% of their final grade, this takes the form of a personal portfolio, work on this portfolio continues into Year 11. For the personal portfolio, students work on a theme of their choice from a range of suggested titles. Students work with a range of media, making connections to artists to produce a portfolio demonstrating their skills and leading to a personal informed and meaningful response.

Year 10/11

Term 1: Students continue with their coursework/portfolio work.

Term 2: Students start work on exam preparation based on a choice of externally set titles. They sit a ten hour exam over two days where they will work in the Art rooms to produce a final and informed final piece.

Photography GCSE

Term 1 - Students start work on their coursework worth 60% of their final grade. This is based on Portrait Photography. Students analyse the work of a number of Portrait Photographers, before developing their ideas further. Students edit their photographs both digitally and physically.


Term 2: Students start work on exam preparation based on a choice of externally set titles. They sit a ten hour exam over two days where they will work in the Photography rooms to produce a final and informed final piece.
